Aurelia Nobels matches career-best eighth place as Red Bull Ring weekend highlights continued GB3 progress

Aurelia Nobels matched her career-best eighth-place finish in the GB3 Championship at the Red Bull Ring, continuing her upward trajectory with another top-ten result.

Aurelia Nobels matched her career-best eighth-place finish in the GB3 Championship at the Red Bull Ring, continuing her upward trajectory with another top-ten result.

After an encouraging start to her rookie GB3 Championship campaign, Aurelia Nobels arrived at the Red Bull Ring carrying momentum from her strongest weekend in the series to date. Stepping up to Formula Regional-level machinery after graduating from Formula 4, the Brazilian had steadily built confidence throughout the opening rounds with consistent midfield performances, recording two top-15 finishes at Silverstone before adding another solid result at Spa-Francorchamps.

That progress culminated at the Hungaroring, where Nobels showcased good racecraft and increasingly competitive pace to secure a career-best eighth-place finish, her first top-ten result in GB3.

Despite contact denying her another potential top-ten finish in the reverse-grid race, Nobels left Budapest eager to continue the positive trend in Austria.

The championship headed straight from Hungary to Austria for the fourth round of the season at the Red Bull Ring, whose short, high-speed layout in the Styrian mountains presented a very different challenge from the Hungaroring. Nobels however enjoyed another encouraging start to the weekend, ending Friday's practice sessions inside the top ten and once again showing competitive pace as Hillspeed continued to make progress.

In the opening qualifying session, Nobels steadily improved her pace throughout, setting a best lap of 1:25.329 on her final attempt to secure 12th on the grid for Race 1.

The second qualifying session initially looked even more promising. Nobels posted a 1:25.394 to move into tenth place with five minutes remaining, putting herself in contention for another strong starting position. However, her quickest lap was deleted for track limits, leaving her with a 1:25.409 and 14th on the grid.

Race 1 unfortunately ended almost before it had begun. Starting from 12th on the grid under sunny skies at the Red Bull Ring, Nobels made an excellent getaway and was immediately challenging for a place inside the top ten into Turn 1. However, disaster struck moments later when the Hitech machine of Jacob Micallef made contact with the Hillspeed car. The impact was significant enough that Micallef's car briefly climbed over Nobels' machine, ripping the rear wing from the Brazilian's car.

With extensive damage sustained, Nobels was forced to return to the pits at the end of the opening lap. The Hillspeed crew attempted repairs, but the damage proved terminal and Nobels was forced to retire before the race had properly developed. It was a frustrating outcome after another promising start had once again been undone by circumstances entirely outside her control.

Sunday morning's second race offered Nobels an opportunity to bounce back as she lined up 14th on the grid. The opening laps proved hectic, with several close battles involving the Hillspeed teammates. On lap two, Dante Vinci suffered a moment that forced Nobels to take avoiding action, costing her several positions as she dropped to 18th.

Nobels however immediately began another determined recovery. She capitalized when Yuhao Fu dropped down the order before overtaking Peter Bouzinelos to climb to 16th. Continuing to push forward, she gained another place before producing a brilliant overtake, confidently passing Lewis Gilbert to move back into 14th position.

Although Bouzinelos was eventually able to reclaim the place, Nobels remained in the battle throughout the remainder of the contest. She took the chequered flag in 16th after another fighting performance, and was promoted to 12th post-penalties.

The reverse-grid finale provided one final opportunity to return to the top ten. Lining up from 13th on the grid after an aborted first start caused by Deagan Fairclough's stalled car, Nobels made an exceptional getaway when the race finally got underway. While chaos unfolded ahead as Abbi Pulling became an innocent victim of a multi-car accident at Turn 2, Nobels brilliantly avoided the incident and emerged eighth when the safety car was deployed.

Following the restart with 12 minutes remaining, Nobels immediately went onto the attack. Closing rapidly on teammate Dante Vinci, she launched a decisive move into Turn 2 under braking, completing an excellent overtake to move into seventh place.

Now running comfortably inside the top ten, the Brazilian began closing on Flynn Jackes and Leon Wilson ahead. Jackes came under increasing pressure and locked up while defending, with Nobels constantly looking for an opportunity. However, her attack also brought Martin Molnar and Vinci back into this pack.

As Nobels defended her position, the trio ran almost three abreast exiting Turn 2. Molnar managed to edge ahead, but Nobels retained eighth place while successfully keeping Vinci behind in another mature display of racecraft.

A second safety car was then required after Gilbert became stranded in the gravel, bunching up the field once again for a short sprint to the finish.

At the restart with just three minutes remaining, Vinci attacked aggressively into Turn 1; Nobels was forced deep into the corner and temporarily lost two positions as Lucas Fluxá also found a way through, dropping the Brazilian to tenth.

The race was turned on its head once more almost immediately when Kyuho Lee and Rodrigo Gonzalez collided ahead, promoting Nobels back into eighth place for the final lap.

Despite the leading group battling intensely in the closing corners, Nobels was unable to quite close enough to gain further positions and crossed the finish line in eighth place, equalling the career-best result she had achieved only a week earlier at the Hungaroring.

Aurelia combined excellent starts, confident overtakings and good defensive driving, earning her a second consecutive top-ten finish in the highly challenging GB3 Championship.

After four rounds, Nobels has moved onto 56 championship points, especially making significant progress over the last two events.

The GB3 Championship now returns to the United Kingdom for the next round at Silverstone on 1-2 August, where Nobels will look to continue her encouraging run of form and build on back-to-back top-ten weekends.
