Alba Hurup Larsen made her first Formula 4 start in Europe at the 2025 Formula Winter Series season opener in Portimão, delivering a remarkable weekend with two top-15 finishes for the newly announced F1 Academy driver.

The 16-year-old Danish racer is preparing for her first full-time season in single-seaters after stepping up from karting to F4 in 2024, competing in two rounds of the Indian F4 Championship.

Hurup Larsen, the winner of the final FIA Girls on Track - Rising Stars program, made her single-seater debut in India with Speed Demons Delhi, securing a top-10 finish on her debut at Madras International Raceway. She followed that up with an impressive sixth-place result in the second round at the Chennai street circuit, finishing three of the five races she entered in the points.

In November 2024, Hurup Larsen was announced as the new Tommy Hilfiger ambassador in F1 Academy. At just 16 years old, she will be one of the youngest drivers on the grid. Her entry will be operated by MP Motorsport, and she has already started an intensive testing program with the Dutch team to prepare for her debut in the all-female series.

The Formula Winter Series thus provided an excellent learning opportunity, and Hurup Larsen joined Swiss team Jenzer Motorsport for the Gedlich-promoted championship, which is entering its third season, with a highly competitive 30-car grid.

One of the biggest highlights of the 2025 season is the significant female presence—one-third of the grid consists of female drivers. The Portimão season opener featured the highest number of women in a mixed-gender F4 race, with nine female entries.

Drivers had six free practice sessions leading up to the race weekend. Hurup Larsen made significant progress on Thursday and Friday, gradually closing in on the top 20.

In the first 15-minute qualifying session on Saturday morning, Hurup Larsen improved her lap times consistently, clocking a 1:48.7 with five minutes remaining and briefly breaking into the top 20. She later improved by half a second, setting a personal best of 1:48.231, which placed her P26.

With fresh tyres, Hurup Larsen returned to the track for the second qualifying session. She quickly found the 1:47s pace, ultimately improving to P24 with a 1:47.646—demonstrating the potential to fight for a top-20 finish on her first Formula Winter Series weekend against some of the most promising young talents in European F4.

RACE 1

A few hours later, the first race of the Formula Winter Series got underway. Hurup Larsen started from P26, while Gabriel Gomez secured pole position alongside Edu Robinson.

At the start, Robinson took the lead, passing both US Racing cars, while chaos unfolded in the midfield at Turn 1, forcing several drivers to take the escape road.

Hurup Larsen lost a couple of positions in the opening lap but followed fellow female rookie Payton Westcott in their recovery drive. She soon regained positions, overtaking Aiva Anagnostiadis and moving back into P26.

She found herself in a tight pack, briefly falling behind the recovering Maksimilian Popov before settling into a rhythm. On lap 9, she overtook Rafaela Ferreira for P26 and steadily pulled away, building a two-second gap.

An incident involving Enea Frey and Thomas Bearman on lap 12 brought out the Safety Car, as the #20 Jenzer Motorsport car was stranded on track. The race resumed for a one-lap sprint to the finish. Robinson led the restart, fending off Gomez and Luka Sammalisto.

Hurup Larsen had a strong restart, navigating the pack and moving into P20. On the final lap, she overtook Dante Vinci to finish in P18. After several post-race penalties, she was promoted to P15, securing an impressive top-15 finish on her series debut- gaining eleven places from her starting position.

RACE 2

A quick turnaround saw Hurup Larsen line up P25 for Race 2, aiming to move forward again. With Kirill Kutskov and Kabir Anurag unable to take the start from the grid, most drivers gained two positions before lights out.

Once again, Robinson had a lightning start from the second row but ran wide at Turn 1, allowing Gomez to reclaim the lead. Hurup Larsen avoided early race chaos and was up to P19 when the Safety Car was deployed following a clash between Ferreira and Mathilda Paatz on lap 2.

On the lap 6 restart, Hurup Larsen executed a brilliant getaway, quickly advancing to P16. However, the race was soon neutralized again as Aleksander Ruta and Andrea Dupe collided, bringing out another Safety Car.

Restarting from P15, she had already gained over 10 positions in the early stages, putting her fourth among rookies and just behind Artem Severiukhin in the battle for a rookie podium.

When the green flag waved on lap 10, Gomez held the lead while Robinson had to defend from Popov. Hurup Larsen, meanwhile, came under pressure from Joanne Ciconte and the fast-recovering Kutskov.

Despite being in fierce battles, she overtook Alisha Palmowski on lap 11, moving into P14. However, she was later passed by the GB4 Vice-Champion as well as Kutskov, slipping back to P16.

Determined, she defended well from Zhuravskiy on the final lap, maintaining a strong 1:47s pace. She finished in P16, but after post-race penalties, she was promoted to P15 once again—marking another top-15 finish and an excellent fourth place among rookies.

RACE 3

The final race of the weekend took place in mixed weather conditions, with some teams gambling on slick tyres. Starting from P23, Hurup Larsen had another opportunity to break into the top 20.

However, an issue with the starting lights saw only three lights illuminate before all went out, causing a chaotic launch. Some drivers struggled off the line, while those on wet tyres initially had an advantage. Leo Robinson briefly took the lead, but several midfield drivers spun on the slicks, leading to an early red flag due to the start procedure issue.

Once racing resumed behind the Safety Car, McLaughlin took the lead in a three-wide battle at the front.

Hurup Larsen made a strong start, immediately gaining positions and moving into P20. She kept her cool in the tricky conditions, passing Ciconte on lap 4 after a close battle.

Later, she fought Sebastian Bach but lost the top-20 position before settling into her rhythm. As the track dried, the slick-equipped cars gained pace.

By the final laps, Hurup Larsen had significantly improved her times, setting a 2:02.9 lap—remarkably close to top-10 pace. She rapidly closed a two-second gap to Ferreira and overtook her on the penultimate lap to reclaim a top-20 spot.

She finished the race in P19, concluding a remarkable F4 debut weekend in Europe.

Hurup Larsen’s Formula Winter Series debut was a strong statement, frequently fighting among the top-five rookies and proving her ability to fight in such a competitive field.

With two top-15 finishes and strong runs in both dry and wet conditions, she demonstrated good racecraft in her first Formula Winter Series weekend.

She now looks ahead to the next round at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia from February 13-16.
