Karen Gaillard’s 2026 campaign in the Porsche Carrera Cup Italy began with a challenging opening weekend at Imola, where the Swiss driver escaped unharmed from a big crash in the opening laps of the first race that ultimately brought her weekend to an early end.

The Iron Dames driver embarked on a new chapter in one of Europe’s most competitive one-make GT championships after a season of steady progression in Porsche Carrera Cup France in 2025; Gaillard stepped up to the Italian series in 2026 with Ombra Racing, aiming to continue her development against a highly competitive 31-car field in the championship’s 20th anniversary season.

The introduction of ABS to the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars added another layer of adaptation, while the Swiss driver also faced the additional challenge of learning the technical Imola circuit for the first time, alongside integrating into a new team environment.

Despite these hurdles, Gaillard showed encouraging progress through the weekend. In the sole practice session, she steadily improved her pace, initially clocking a 1:45.947 to place P28 overall and ninth among rookies.

During the qualifying session, Gaillard found significant time, dipping into the 1:45.0 range before improving further to a 1:44.7. Two red flags ultimately curtailed running and prevented further gains, leaving her classified P26 overall and P11 in the rookie standings, within a tightly packed field where 18 cars were covered by just one second.

Race 1 on Saturday offered a glimpse of Gaillard’s potential on the opening lap. Starting from P30 on the grid, she made an excellent launch when the lights went out, navigating cleanly through the opening corners to gain six positions almost immediately, climbing to P24. She then picked up another place to move into P23 by the end of the lap.

However, her promising charge was cut short on lap two when she was involved in a heavy crash at the Villeneuve chicane. The incident brought out a red flag, but fortunately Gaillard was able to climb out of the car unharmed.

The damage sustained in the accident proved too significant to repair in time for Sunday’s second race despite the efforts from the Ombra Racing team, forcing Gaillard to withdraw and ending her weekend prematurely.

“After discovering the track during the official test, I was still getting up to speed this weekend and not where I wanted to be in terms of pace", Gaillard reflected on the challenging round.

"Unfortunately, my weekend ended early after a crash in race 1. I’m really sorry for the team. We couldn’t make it to race 2.”

Karen Gaillard will now turn her attention to the second round of the season at Misano on 8–10 May, where she will aim to bounce back.
