Maya Weug will step up to Formula Regional European Championship in 2023, joining Finnish team KIC Motorsport. The first ever woman to join the prestigious Ferrari Driver Academy will stay with the Italian team development program and will be promoted to F3 Regional machinery after two seasons in Italian F4.

"I'm really excited to be joining KIC Motorsport in 2023 in the Formula Regional by Alpine championship. We’ve had some good tests together this winter and therefore I can’t wait for the new season to get underway" - said the Dutch-Belgian-Spanish racer, 18, who won the inaugural edition of the Girls on Track - Rising Stars programme in 2020, securing the contract with Ferrari.

As part of the Iron Dames/Iron Lynx team, Weug had a remarkable progression over the two years in Italian F4 - arguably one of the most competitive feeder series globally - and scored points on 9 occasions in 2022, at least once in every round except Monza. Her best finish was a sixth place in Imola, but had strong runs in Misano and Red Bull Ring as well.

Weug will therefore continue to be part of FDA in 2023, as she makes one more step up on the single-seater ladder.

Maya had her first ever outing in a Tatuus T318 Formula Regional car in the post-season testing in Mugello in October, when she joined the Prema line-up for the 2-day test.

She then tested during winter with KIC Motorsport - at Le Castellet as well as Barcelona - and will now join the ranks of the Finnish squad, becoming the first 2023 signing for the team.

The team had a remarkable campaign in 2020, when they finished second in the teams' championship behind Prema, claiming four race wins in the series.

"Maya did good work in tests and we expect that she will continue the same kind of progress during season 2023 - added Team Principal Petri Lappalainen.

The 2023 season is scheduled to start on 22-23 April at Imola.
