2022 Formula Regional Japan champion Miki Koyama has joined forces with Lamborghini factory team Iron Lynx for the upcoming Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia season, as the Italian powerhouse team teams up with legendary team Theodore Racing.
Koyama, who raced in a part time season in Japan's premier sports car series Super GT in 2023, will share the #32 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo 2 with two-time Macau Grand Prix winner Charles Leong in the SJM Iron Lynx Theodore Racing entry.
“It is great to also welcome two new drivers into the team as well as the legendary Theodore Racing name. Both Charles and Miki are talented young drivers, and we look forward to seeing how that partnership develops throughout the year" – Iron Lynx Team Principal Andrea Piccini said about the announcement. "Linking up with Theodore Racing is going to be a very exciting collaboration for the whole Iron Lynx family.”
Both Koyama and Leung – who has also raced in GT3s over the last couple of seasons picking up four victories – have a competitive background in single seaters.
After a few seasons in Japanese F4, Koyama was selected in 2019 to enter the inaugural edition of the all-female W Series championship, where she soon proved to be competitive.
Koyama set the fastest lap at the very first race and was fourth in Misano. She would finish seventh in the championship and returned to the following on-track season in 2021.
Back in Japan in 2022, Koyama graduated to Formula Regional Japan and enjoyed one of the most remarkable seasons, claiming the title after seven race victories and 17 podiums out of 17 races. With a third place as her worst result of the year, Miki Koyama became the first ever woman to win a FIA-sanctioned mixed-gender single seater championship.
Miki has since then stepped up to sports cars, in a third driver role for the Anest Iwata Racing with Arnage outfit in Super GT's GT300 class. She contested four endurance rounds in 2023, claiming a best finish of eleventh at Autopolis, where she shared the Lexus RC F GT3 with Igor Fraga and Yuga Furutani.
Koyama and Leung will drive in the six-event Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asian championship, which gets underway at Sepang on 3-5 May. The series will also visit Australian track The Bend in June, Korea's Inje Speedium in July, before Koyama's home race at Fuji in August. Shanghai International Circuit will host the penultimate round in September, while the season finale will see drivers heading to Jerez, Spain, which is also set to host the Lamborghini World Finals.
